As America's oldest auction house, Freeman’s has sold fine American furniture and decorative arts longer than any auction house in the country. With a preeminent reputation for offering fresh-to-market and historically significant examples of 18th and 19th century furniture, portraits, silver, and textiles from the Philadelphia area, the American Furniture, Folk and Decorative Arts Department also brings exemplary New England and Southern material culture to auction.
The range offered in our two annual sales is broad—formal and country furniture, timepieces, silver, needlework, quilts, portraits, Chinese Export porcelain, pottery, Militaria, Flags, American Indian Arts, and Folk painted furniture, decoys, Fraktur, portraiture, carvings, and weathervanes. The department also participates in Freeman's annual The Pennsylvania Sale—a cross-departmental auction unique to Freeman's that celebrates the Keystone State's longstanding legacy as a major and influential artistic region.
During the past five years, the department has had the privilege of offering property from a number of important institutions, museums, and private collections, including Property Deaccessioned by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, The American Indian Collection of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Property from the Estate of George A. “Frolic” Weymouth, Furnishings from Historic Lemon Hill Mansion, and A Grand Old Flag: The Stars & Stripes Collection of Dr. Peter J. Keim.
