Pennsylvania Impressionists

Edward Willis Redfield, Spring at Point Pleasant on the Delaware River

On account of our expertise, significant track record, and Philadelphia location, Freeman's maintains its position as the market leader in sales of Pennsylvania Impressionists. With more than 100 works offered each year, Freeman’s has sold more works by artists associated with the New Hope School than any other auction house. We are the only house to offer designated sales in this exciting collecting category.

Each season, Freeman’s offers fresh-to-market works by leading Pennsylvania Impressionists, including Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, Fern Coppedge, George Sotter, Mary Elizabeth Price, and William Lathrop, among others.

Freeman's June 6 American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists auction far outperformed its overall estimate to achieve an impressive sale result of nearly $3.5M. The 89-lot auction featured a 91% sell-through rate and multiple standout sales, confirming Freeman’s strength in presenting important American art at auction. Between December 2020 and June 2021, Freeman’s has achieved their best year yet for American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists: with over $10 million realized for fewer than 200 lots. In the years prior, Freeman's sales of works from the collections of Heidi Bingham Stott (2020), Bonnie O’Boyle (2018), and Dorrance 'Dodo' H. Hamilton (2017) featured strong results for Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, Rae Sloan Bredin, and other Pennsylvania Impressionists.

June 14, 2020

Freeman’s proudly presented select works from the collection of Heidi Bingham Stott as a featured part of their American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists auction. The daughter of Dr. Charles T. Bingham (1906-1993), Heidi Bingham Stott inherited the bold and eclectic collecting taste of her grandfather, the late Hiram Bingham (1875-1956), who famously rediscovered the famous archaeological site of Machu Picchu in 1911 before serving as Governor, and later as Senator, of Connecticut. The fresh-to-market collection showcased high-quality examples by the New Hope School artists, with important works by Daniel Garber, Edward Willis Redfield, George Sotter and Fern Coppedge each acheiving strong prices.

The George D. Horst Collection of Fine Art

The George D. Horst Collection of Fine Art

March 30, 2014

The fine art collection amassed by Pennsylvania businessman George D. Horst hung in a custom built gallery on his estate, unseen by the public for nearly a century. Mr. Horst’s collection reflected his special love for Pennsylvania Impressionists, such as Daniel Garber, Edward Willis Redfield, William Lathrop, as well as for American artists known as 'The Ten,' including Childe Hassam and Frank Weston Benson. Other sale highlights included a magnificent still life by Emil Carlsen, an impressive Jonas Lie, as well as an idyllic George Loftus Noyes landscape, which all set new world auction records for their respective artists. Overall, the white glove auction garnered much attention and elicited consistently strong bidding, setting new world auction records for 20 artists.
