A fine English needlework sampler
Worked by Hannah Vertue (1736-1826), dated "1744"

Worked with silk threads on a linen ground, triangle border, depicting alphabet above alternating flowers surrounding inscription, "Hannah Vertue Aged 9 Years 1744," center with pious verse, "Obedience to Parents," flanked by flamestitch sections, the lower section depicting two registers of trees, flowers, birds, peacocks, dogs, crowns, and hearts; framed.

Note

Hannah Vertue was born to John Vertue and Esther Wainwright, and had five siblings. In 1766, she married John Stuart (b. circa 1735). She lived in Woodbridge, Suffolk until her death in 1826.
