Freeman’s May 3 American Furniture, Folk and Decorative Arts auction brings a fine selection of early Americana to market—from sumptuous furniture and silver to paintings and embroidery. Leading the sale is an oil on canvas by Nicolino Calyo offering an expansive 19th century Philadelphia landscape: View of the Schuylkill River and Fairmount Park Water Works. An additional fine sale highlight is a plan of the city of Washington, D.C. worked with silk threads, watercolor, and ink on a silk ground by Grace Turner Cleaver. Collectors of early American furniture will find several exemplary works, including a fine Chippendale carved mahogany chest-on-chest, circa 1770, and the Pemberton-Morris-Lloyd Chippendale carved and figured mahogany sideboard table, attributed to Thomas Affleck and boasting a rich, storied provenance within an American family dating back to the late 18th century. Among the sale’s many silver offerings, two works—a silver two-handled cup made by John Dixwell circa 1715, and a silver caudle cup made by John Coney circa 1700—emerge as clear highlights.
