Group of First 5 Issues of "XXe Siecle"

Paris, 1938-39. In six volumes. Complete set of the first series, Nos. 1-6 (fifth issue numbered 5/6). 4to. Edited by G. di San Lazzaro. Each issue profusely illustrated, and includes over 15 lithographs and woodcuts by Kandinsky, Miró, Matisse, Arp, de Chirico, Duchamp, Pascin, and others. Original stiff printed wrappers, scattered wear and chipping to spines; some hinges cracked or starting. Lot includes a duplicate of the first issue; lacking final text leaf.

A well preserved and scarce complete set of the first series of this major pre-World War II art magazine, featuring prints and illustrations from some of the period's most important modernist artists. Published by Italian writer and historian Gualtieri di San Lazzaro (1904-74), XXe Siecle was a major voice of modernist sensibilities in the period before the Second World War. Each issue is devoted to a specific theme, and features essays, interviews, reviews, and original prints.
