Note
In 1930, McCarter said "I've wanted for years to paint the fact and color and vibration of the sound of a chime of bells." Different examples of this bold, imaginative subject now exist, the earliest exampled dating from the early 1930s, such as the present work. Other versions can be seen in the colleciton of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Woodmere Museum of Art.
