A group of five assorted Chinese "Mirror-black"-glazed porcelain baluster vases
Three with apocryphal six-character Kangxi marks

PROVENANCE:

Property from the Collection of George W. Ryan, Philadelphia (1924-2006)

Mr. Ryan studied at the University of Pennsylvania and served as a medic and radiologist with the 195th General Hospital in the 101st Airborne division in the United States Army during WWII. After serving in Belgium and Germany, Mr. Ryan spent time in Paris where he began collecting in earnest. Returning to the US, he completed his studies in 1948 at the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in English Literature, going on to a career as an English teacher in the Philadelphia school system. He was a member of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the Philobiblon Club, and the International Snuff Bottle Collector's Society.
