Benton's excellent characterization of American folk and country musician and actor, Burl Ives (1909-95), remembered as the voice of Sam the Snowman in the 1964 Christmas classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, as well as his supporting roles in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and The Big Country (1958), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
