Note

The present painting was formerly attributed to William Hoare (British, 1707-1792). The sitter is shown wearing the Symbol of the Order of the Garter embroidered or pinned on the left shoulder of his mantle, as well as a blue riband, indicators that he was Knighted into the Order. The consignor's colonial style home, Glen Cree, was featured in the magazine Colonial Homes, November-December 1985, and much of the collection was photographed.
