Note

John Penn was born in Philadelphia February 29, 1700. The eldest son to William Penn, he was nicknamed "The American" all of his life, being the only Penn to be born in the New World. Although he worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania during most of his life, he died in England in 1746. The present work depicts Penn in a stately pose and elegant attire as he is holding an administrative document.
