Auguste Rodin’s Mère et Fille Mourante, a moving mother-and-child sculpture, leads Freeman’s February 22 European Art and Old Masters auction; the work was commissioned by Mrs. Thomas Merrill in 1908 and has remained in the family for over a century. The sale is highlighted by four paintings by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, including Le Rappel des Vaches, an important deaccession by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and La Batterie de Sainte-Adresse, formerly in the collection of painter André Derain. The sale’s Old Masters section is led by Jacopo Palma il Giovane’s Adoration of the Magi and also includes several striking portraits, as well as a fine engraving by Albrecht Dürer. Collectors of Russian art will be pleased to find works by Ivan Fedorovich Choultsé, Leon Bakst, and Dmitry Nalbandyan, among others.
