New Haven, Oct(ober). 21, 1782. One sheet, 6 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. (159 x 171 mm). Autograph letter, signed by Roger Sherman to Connecticut State Treasurer, John Lawrence, to "discount with Jonathan Fitch Esqr. Sheriff of New Haven County Thirty pounds lawful money on account of monies by him Collected on Executions in favour of the State, & charge it to me on account of my Debenture for attending the Superior Court in the August and September Circuit 1782"; docketed on verso, likely in Lawrence's hand, likely endorsed by Fitch on same. Creasing from old or contemporary folds; dampstaining in bottom half.
Roger Sherman (1721-93) was an American merchant, statesman, and Founding Father, from Connecticut. He is the only person to sign all four of the most significant documents of early American history: the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Association, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. During the time of this letter, Sherman was serving on the Connecticut Council of Safety.
