Robin Nicholson has almost 35 years’ experience in the art world, working, respectively, in the commercial gallery sector from 1987 to 1992, as corporate art curator of the Drambuie Collection from 1992 to 2006, and, since 2006, with American art museums. From 2006-2014 he served as Deputy Director for Art and Education and Director of Exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and subsequently served as Executive Director at the Frick Pittsburgh (2014-2018), and Telfair Museums, Savannah (2019-2020).
With an MA in the History of Art from the University of Cambridge, Mr. Nicholson brings diverse experience of all facets of both commercial and non-profit art institutions. In 2005-2006 he worked closely with Freeman’s and Lyon and Turnbull on the sale of the Drambuie corporate collection, which, after an international tour and two-day sale, sold almost 100% of lots and achieved eleven world records for Scottish art.
Mr. Nicholson is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors and many other professional museum organizations. He is able, with the Freeman’s team, to offer art museums peer-to-peer advice and consultation on collections policies, deaccessioning strategies, and consignments. Art museums are re-thinking the role of collections in their mission and core values and Freeman’s is poised to offer services as a discrete, boutique, auction house.
