European Art and Old Masters

Over the years, Freeman’s European Art and Old Masters department has proven its capacity to understand and target the international art market, successfully selling the large array of Renaissance to mid-20th centuries drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures consigned through us. Our specialists have obtained major successes with 19th century French Impressionist paintings and sculptures by Eugène Boudin, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, Henry Moret, Maurice Utrillo and Jean Dufy, among others.

Our strategy for pricing and marketing, paired with our highly academic and thoroughly researched essays, have yielded our consignors consistently strong results, as exemplified by the sale of Paul Cézanne’s La Vie des Champs ($1,450,000) and the recent new world auction record set for a late 15th century Nursing Madonna by the Master of the Embroidered Foliage ($2,470,000)–the highest price obtained for an Old Master painting in Philadelphia.

On February 23, 2021, Freeman’s latest European Art and Old Masters auction realized over $6.4M in just 67 lots—Freeman's best Fine Art auction result to date—and set a new world auction record and new house record for the exemplary White Interior by Viennese Secessionist Carl Moll, which sold for $4.75 million.
